Mail house
A mail house is a company that prepares and lodges bulk mail on behalf of other businesses. Where an individual letter gets a stamp and a street posting box, volume mail goes through a mail house: the mail house prints the pieces, addresses and sorts them to Australia Post's specifications, and lodges them in bulk under its own arrangements with Australia Post.
What a mail house actually does
- Print and finishing — producing the physical piece: postcards, letters, envelopes, inserts.
- Data processing — cleaning the address list, removing duplicates, and formatting addresses to Australia Post addressing standards.
- Sorting and barcoding — presorting mail and applying machine-readable barcodes so it qualifies for Australia Post's bulk letter services.
- Lodgement — delivering the prepared mail into Australia Post's network in bulk, at rates below a retail stamp.
Why "licensed" matters
Bulk lodgement rates are not available at a post office counter. They come through formal arrangements between the mail house and Australia Post, which is why volume mail in Australia flows through licensed mail houses rather than direct from the sender. The mail house's approvals are what turn a box of printed cards into accepted, trackable, bulk-rate mail.
How Shopify brands use one without a contract
Traditionally, using a mail house meant minimum volumes and a commercial agreement — workable for a bank's statement run, not for a DTC brand sending a few hundred win-back cards a month. Direct mail automation platforms close that gap: TouchDrop prints and lodges through a licensed Australian mail house on the brand's behalf, per piece, with no minimums, so a single triggered postcard rides the same bulk infrastructure. How that works end to end is covered on the direct mail automation for Australia page, and the underlying postage economics in the Australia Post direct mail pricing guide.
