BFCM direct mail playbook for Shopify: a postcard landing in a mailbox during the Black Friday sales period

Short answer: Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the most crowded weeks of the year in the inbox. Direct mail is not a replacement for your Klaviyo email and SMS, it is the channel that reaches the people those miss: customers who stopped opening, carts that stalled, and first-time buyers you want to keep. Every play below runs off Shopify and Klaviyo data you already have, uses addresses already on file, and can be set up today. Two rules apply to all of them: set them up before the rush, and match each card's offer to the email it follows.

Key takeaways

Why add mail in November

Your best BFCM emails will do their job for the people who open them, and that is exactly the point: this playbook is for everyone else. An email unsubscribe is a preference about email, not a verdict on your brand, and a large share of any list has quietly stopped opening. A postcard does not need an open, does not land in spam, and gets held in a hand instead of scrolled past. Used together, email and mail do more than either does alone.

The six plays

1. The second-order play (post-purchase)

Who: first-time buyers who bought during BFCM and haven't ordered again. Why: the 30-to-45 day window after a first order is where a one-time discount shopper becomes a repeat customer, and in December their inbox is at its worst, but you already have their address. Do: a thank-you card with a gentle bounceback offer, timed to land a few weeks after the first order. Thank first, sell second. Set it up before BFCM so buyers acquired on Black Friday fall into it automatically.

2. Win back the unreachables

Who: past customers who stopped opening your emails, or unsubscribed, but have a real order history and an address on file. Why: nobody opts out of their letterbox, and an unsubscribe is often temporary or accidental. Do: one strong card with your best offer, laddered by time since last order if you want to tune it. Don't mention the unsubscribe; it's just a good offer from a brand they know, in a new place. See our guide to reaching email-unengaged customers.

3. The abandoned-checkout backstop

Who: shoppers who entered a shipping address and didn't complete checkout. Why: peak-season carts mostly die from distraction, and more email into the same inbox won't revive them; a physical reminder in a different place often will. Do: after your Klaviyo email and SMS sequence runs, send a postcard to the address they entered, reiterating the exact offer from the last email. Cut your abandoned-cart emails at the start of BFCM week so the card never carries an expired offer.

4. VIP appreciation

Who: your highest-value customers. Why: your best people get the same email blast as everyone else, and a card that acknowledges them is disproportionately memorable without needing a discount. Do: send your top tier a genuine thank-you, ideally with early access or a small perk rather than a bigger markdown.

5. Mail any Klaviyo segment

Who: any segment you've already built, such as high predicted value or lapsed category buyers. Why: the segments you built for email work just as well as a mailing list, and if a segment converts over email it's worth an extra physical touch in the one week it matters most. Do: pick the segment, pick the offer, send. It reaches the slice of that segment your emails aren't landing with.

6. The seasonal offer to your best customers

Who: engaged past buyers. Why: your headline BFCM offer deserves more than one channel, and a card guarantees your best customers see it even if the email gets buried. Do: put your single best offer on a card and time it to land in the days before your sale opens.

Timing (Australia and UK)

Postcards are printed and lodged inside the destination country, via Australia Post in Australia and Royal Mail in the UK. Plan for 3 to 7 business days in transit in Australia, so work backwards from when you want the card to land; in the UK, cards are lodged domestically and arrive within a few working days rather than weeks.

A simple calendar: in early November, the win-back-the-unreachables mailing goes out, since these people see none of your BFCM emails and the card is often the only message they get all season. Before BFCM week, the post-purchase and abandoned-checkout campaigns are already live. In the days before your sale opens, the seasonal offer and VIP cards land.

Does direct mail actually work for ecommerce?

It does when it's aimed at the right people. Our own strongest result is a 6.2x return on a win-back campaign run on a founder's direct-to-consumer brand, mailing lapsed customers who'd gone quiet on email. We plan new programs around a more conservative incremental figure, roughly 2.5x as a midpoint, and recommend a holdout group so you measure the lift, not just the sales that would have happened anyway.

Independent benchmarks back the direction: the ANA/DMA Response Rate Report (2018) put house-list response (people who've bought from you) at 9% against 4.9% for prospect lists, close to double. That's why every play above targets people who already know you, not a cold list. See our full benchmark round-up for the sourced figures.

Frequently asked questions

Should I add direct mail during BFCM if my email is already busy?

Yes, because the inbox is the most crowded it gets in November while the mailbox is not. Direct mail is not a replacement for your Klaviyo email and SMS; it reaches the people those miss, so the two do more together than either alone.

When should each BFCM postcard campaign be set up?

Before the rush. Post-purchase and abandoned-checkout campaigns should already be running before BFCM week, the win-back-the-unreachables mailing goes out in early November, and seasonal and VIP cards land in the days before your sale opens.

Which plays can I run if I only have customer addresses on file?

All six here. Every play targets people who already bought from you or entered an address at checkout, so it uses data you already hold. It is not cold prospecting.

How long does a BFCM postcard take to arrive?

Cards are printed and lodged inside the destination country. For Australian sends, plan for 3 to 7 business days in transit; in the UK, cards are lodged domestically via Royal Mail and arrive within a few working days. Work backwards from when you want the card to land.

How do I know a postcard drove the sale?

Each card carries a unique discount code tied to that customer's Shopify order plus a QR code, so redemptions attribute to the individual. Hold out a random slice of the segment and compare against the mailed group over the redemption window to read incremental revenue.

Does this work for UK brands too?

Yes. The same plays run in the UK with domestic Royal Mail fulfilment. Australia is live and self-serve; UK is invite-only.
